According to a holiday survey conducted by Cars.com, travelers are still on the move amid the pandemic, but remaining closer to home. The digital automotive marketplace study revealed nearly half of Americans (46 percent) planned December travel for the holidays, while the majority (66 percent) planned to use personal vehicles as transport. The study also concluded the number of Americans planning New Year’s Eve travel is on the decline.

“Many people are staying home for the holidays as suspected, and those who are traveling will continue to rely on their personal vehicle. For most holiday travelers, the decision to drive is no longer primarily influenced by cost or convenience, but safety and security,” said Jenni Newman, editor-in-chief, Cars.com. “Cars.com has been tracking travel plans since October and has steadily seen the number of New Year’s travelers dwindle. This could mean that people are unwilling to give up time with family but more likely to pass on this year’s New Year’s party.”

Cars.com’s holiday survey questioned 1,000 Americans from Oct. 22–25, about their December travel plans, and compared the new results to the 2020 Cars.com Thanksgiving travel survey.

Cars.com’s survey determined 2020 December holiday travel trends, including travelers choosing cars over trains; New Year’s celebrations held at home; and major cities seeing an uptick in holiday travel.

“When it comes to important decisions like whether to celebrate the holidays in person or virtually this year, we recommend following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and staying up to date with local COVID-19 rules and restrictions to make the best decision for you and your loved ones,” said Newman.

Amansara Review

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
