Built by Gernot Langes-Swarovski above Lake Okanagan in British Columbia’s wine country, Sparkling Hill Resort shimmers in the truest sense of the word. That’s because the property’s décor features 3 million Swarovski elements, from the four-story crystal atrium and crystal chandeliers, to the 265 crystal balls and 7,400-feet plus of crystal strands and chains. Guestrooms sparkle with crystals backlit behind lamps and lights, canopies of starlights shining over soaking tubs and multi-hued crystal patterns on the ceiling.
Running neck-to-neck for attention is the 40,000-square-foot KurSpa, where the menu offers more than 100 treatments and therapies in 48 treatments rooms, including the Aqua Meditation Room, Rose Steam Bath, Crystal Steam Chamber and peppermint-scented ice igloo cabin.
In addition to the seven themed saunas and steam baths, multiple pools and a Kneipp therapy waterway, Sparkling Hill offers the first cryotherapy center in North America. Instead of lounging as you would in a sauna, cryotherapy circuits last no more than two to three minutes in total. Participants wear ight clothing with foot protection, ear coverings, gloves and a surgical mask while moving through progressively colder chambers that range from minus-76 degrees to minus-166 degrees. Circuits are monitored at all times by trained staff. Cryotherapy has proven useful in the treatment of some types of muscle complaints and arthritis, and is used at the Olympic rehabilitation center in Spala, Poland to treat joint issues in professional athletes.
Treat yourself to extra time in a steam chamber as a reward for braving the chill.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
