British Airways’ New Menu for Short-Haul Flights

British Airways announced it will no longer offer free food and drink on its short-haul flights starting next year. The carrier will instead sell food from Marks & Spencer. The move follows an announcement earlier this year from British Airways that it would overhaul its complimentary refreshment policy. The carrier previously insisted free food and drink were an integral part of service on all flights.

“Competition from budget airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet, which have always charged for refreshments, is thought to have made BA reconsider this policy,” reports The Telegraph.

Ending the free food and drink policy could help boost British Airways ability to lower fares and compete with low-cost carriers like easyJet and Ryanair.

But experts predict a backlash.

“Charging short-haul economy class passengers for drinks and sandwiches removes the final distinction between BA and its low cost rivals,” said Nick Trend, consumer expert, The Telegraph Travel. “From the consumer’s point of view the choice carrier largely now comes down to which airline offers the best fare for your destination.”
