The origins of Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, are traced to pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations more than 3,000 years old. It remains an enduring tradition in many parts of the Spanish-speaking world and a spirited way for some to continue the party after Halloween in the United States. However, its purpose — celebrating the lives of family and friends who passed away — sets it apart from typical Halloween celebrations. Hotels and resorts across Mexico integrate Día de los Muertos themes into their roster of activities, restaurants and seasonal décor. However, if you can’t get to Mexico for the party this year, check out a few stateside destinations bringing the holiday and its traditions to life outside of Mexico.
San Antonio, Texas, is home to the country’s largest Day of the Dead celebration with parades, festivals and other cultural events. The Hotel Contessa sets up the perfect base camp for the city-spanning celebration, and on Oct. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m., guests can buy tickets for front-row seats to the festivities at Ambler Texas Kitchen + Cocktails on its Riverwalk patio. The event includes live music, themed cocktails, vendors, face painting and great views of the Spiritlandia River Parade, with colorful barges floating along the San Antonio River. The hotel also stages its first first-ever altar de muertos honoring Lady Contessa, for whom the hotel is named,.
The Crossroads Hotel joins forces with two of Kansas City, Missouri’s most respected fine art destinations — the Mattie Rhodes Art Center & Gallery and Kansas City Museum — as well as local vendors to help bring its 10th Annual Día de los Muertos Celebration alive. In addition to the art displays, the property will host La Fiesta on Oct. 27. Against the backdrop of a gorgeous ofrenda covered in cempasúchil flowers and memorabilia honoring those who passed on to the afterlife, Mexican folkloric music will fill the air as light bites and specialty cocktails are served. Stations will be set up for attendees to create masks and receive complimentary face paint. The Crossroads’ own StoneLion Puppet Theater will further illuminate the holiday’s traditions.
The enduring appeal of the Pixar Animation film Coco and its Día de los Muertos themes carries over to Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. Frontierland transforms into an annual celebration echoing the traditions portrayed in the movie. A trio of mariachi musician calacas (skeleton figurines) preside over displays of brightly colored flowers and other decorative items seen in traditional Day of the Dead ofrendas in El Zócalo Park. Its Rancho del Zócalo will serve authentic bites harmonizing with the ambience.
Finally, those staying at the Sheraton Tribeca New York Hotel or Hilton Garden Inn New York/Tribeca can walk over to popular neighborhood hangout Fonda Restaurant to check out a special Pan de Muertos and hot chocolate-based dishes for the Day of the Dead holiday.

Jun 3, 2025Now’s the Time to See Giza, the Nile and Beyond
All archaeology-obsessed eyes turned hopefully toward Egypt earlier this year when the highly anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum outside Cairo finally began welcoming visitors after construction delays, funding roadblocks and political upheaval in the region (among other factors) conspired to keep things delayed for many long years. The museum’s cherry on the top is slated to open this summer, with the July opening of the museum’s 20-plus-years-in-the-making Tutankhamen galleries and accompanying cache of some 5,000 artifacts and treasures from the boy king’s tomb.
