The Mondrian Bordeaux Les Carmes recently opened in Bordeaux’s elegant Chartrons district, bringing 97 upscale rooms to France’s southwestern city. Occupying a 19th-century house that once held the wine cellars of Maison Calvet, the hotel marks Mondrian’s first European property for celebrated Japanese chef Masaharu Morimoto, who helms the menu and concept for the hotel’s restaurant, Morimoto Bordeaux.

Designed by Philippe Starck, guestrooms and suites embrace cozy and intimate styles with soft light, natural materials, wooden doors, wool curtains and clean lines, all accenting the building’s historic bones. Some rooms and suites also feature private terraces with greenery, and two suites can be connected for special events.

Restaurant Morimoto Bordeaux brings the essence of Japan to Bordeaux, with a menu featuring maki, sushi, sashimi and chef Morimoto’s signature dishes such as lacquered duck and oysters from Arachon Basin. The restaurant offers several dining options, including the warm and festive restaurant, tree-lined terrace and bar offering a vast range of drinks.

In addition to luxurious accommodations and a star restaurant, Mondrian Bordeaux Les Carmes also boasts a wellness center complete with a swimming pool, hammam, sauna and fitness room. The swimming pool features large windows opening onto a terrace and spaces nearly 148 square feet. The wellness center is also home to a steam room and four spacious cabins offering a range of treatments to enhance the body and mind.

Guests of the property also enjoy a 24/7 fitness area equipped with high-performance machines. The hotel also partnered with Codage, a contemporary French brand known for vegan cosmetology, for its beauty and wellbeing offers. Two conference rooms are also available to guests, stocked with tailor-made event services and state-of-the-art technology.

Althoff Grand Hotel Schloss Bensberg Review

After a long drive from our previous destination, it was a relief to see Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg in our view. When we pulled into the hotel court, I felt like we were pulling up to a royal palace. Considering the hotel was originally built as a castle for Prince Elector Johann Wilhelm II of Duesseldorf and his wife, Maria-Luisa of the Medici family, my thought wasn’t that far off.
