Until May 6, visitors to London can stop in Tate Modern to enjoy “The C C Land Exhibition: Pierre Bonnard: The Colour of Memory,” a major exhibition of works by French artist Pierre Bonnard. Around 100 of Bonnard’s most-loved landscapes and domestic scenes are included, gathered from private collections and museums around the globe. It’s the first time a major collection of Bonnard’s works have been on show in the United Kingdom in two decades, and visitors will be able to view the pastoral “Summer 1917” and the urban street scenes in “Piazza del Popolo, Rome 1922.”

A friend of fellow painter Henri Matisse, Bonnard proved to be of significant influence on later artists including Mark Rothko and Patrick Heron. Evoking an abstract quality that resulted from deliberately painting from memory, Bonnard painted his own personal response to events occurring in both World Wars.

Another recurring theme in the artist’s body of work focuses on his wife, Marthe de Méligny. Unwell for much of her life, she regularly engaged in hydrotherapy treatments and Bonnard painted her quite poignantly in various stages of bathing and dressing. Matthew Gale, head of displays, along with assistant curators Helen O’Malley and Juliette Rizzi, curates the Tate Modern exhibit.
