In the coming year, Boeing adds modifications to Alaska Airlines aircraft, allowing for more spacious overhead bins on in-service Boeing 737-900ERs. Alaska Airlines is the first to employ Boeing’s retrofit Space Bins, and it plans to add the new change to 34 aircraft. The bins increase carry-on baggage storage by up to 50 percent. Almost half the fleet plans to sport Boeing Space Bins by next year. “Alaska is committed to making flying hassle-free and comfortable. Many passengers want to keep a bag in the cabin and Boeing’s Space Bins make it possible for virtually everyone to stow a wheeled suitcase. That’s why Alaska is thrilled to be equipping 100 percent of our new jets with Space Bins and retrofitting all of our existing 737-900ERs,” said Mark Eliasen, treasurer and vice president of finance, Alaska Airlines. “Boeing works very closely with our customers to enhance its airplanes with features that improve the passenger experience. By providing our customers with a retrofit option for the Space Bins, we are allowing long-time 737 customers, like Alaska Airlines, the ability to keep their entire fleet current,” said Mike Fleming, vice president, Boeing Fleet Services. It’s estimated the average Space Bin can accommodate six bags, two more than normal, when all baggage meets standard carry-on requirements. The bins lower about two inches further than they previously did, making stowage easier for passengers. The Boeing Space Bins are available for retrofit on Next-Generation 737s, as well as Next-Generation 737 MAXs.
