There’s a special new restaurant in my neighborhood. Along with outstanding food, it is a place filled with love.

Will’s Place was founded by sisters Joan Hallagan and Cathy Maassen in 2022. Hallagan’s son, William, suffered a stroke at birth, resulting in some neurological damage. When William turned 22, he aged out of the education system. Faced with limited options and wanting to give back to him, the idea of Will’s Place was born.

I started hearing about Will’s Place more than a year ago. After a lot of anticipation, Will’s Place had a grand opening in July 2023. Located in the heart of downtown Skokie, Will’s Place is a nonprofit café providing employment and vocational training for adults with disabilities.

I was there for the opening, and I wasn’t alone. The lunch line ran around the block, and the crowd totaled more than 400 patrons, all with big smiles.

Will’s Place is now a regular stop for me. My favorite sandwich is the turkey and Havarti with arugula, tomato and avocado on ciabatta. They also serve a delicious grilled cheese sandwich and several other options. On my last visit, I heard one youngster excitedly proclaim he just ate the best hot dog ever.

I always have a great meal at Will’s Place, but, more importantly, I always have a great experience. Our neighborhood is better because of Will’s Place.
