Weekend in Colonial Williamsburg

by Mary Melnick

Mar 8, 2020

Last weekend my friends and I spent the weekend in Williamsburg, Virginia; none of us had been before, so we didn’t know what to expect. We left late Friday night to avoid traffic, but after a long day of work and driving, we were exhausted by the time we got there, so we decided to hang in our suite and watch a movie.

We didn’t have a set plan for the weekend; we wanted to just go with the flow. When we woke up Saturday morning, we decided to look for a brunch place, but it seemed like everywhere only offered brunch on Sundays. Since we couldn’t find a place, we decided to take our time getting ready and head to lunch instead. We found this place called Amber Ox on Yelp that looked good, so we went there. We all started by ordering a drink; I got a Mojito cider and my friends got a flight of beer, all very good. For lunch I ordered poutine and was happy with my meal.

After lunch it was time to explore the colonial town. We started by doing some shopping. Once we all found what we wanted, we walked the cobblestone streets. The town was beautiful; we saw the Governor’s Palace, the Burton Parish Church, The Market Square and more, but our favorite was the Capitol Building.

We had planned to go out Saturday night, but we decided to stay in and play board games since we had a long drive home Sunday. We all had a great weekend and can’t wait to go back!

What Maui Visitors Need to Know

There’s a lot happening on the beautiful island of Maui and recovery from the devastating fires in Lahaina is underway. Among happy events is a gorgeous cultural redesign of all the suites and villas at Fairmont Kea Lani, plus the opening of the resort’s Hale Kukuna — a 2,000-square-foot cultural center that focuses on sharing Hawai’ian culture, traditions and history, with the goal of a reciprocal sharing of ‘ike (knowledge) and mo’olelo (stories) that link the island’s storied past and vibrant present.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
