I don’t have much vested in the debate centering on the pros and cons of using Uber versus hailing a cab. Boston’s a fairly accessible city, so nine times out of 10 I’ll choose to walk from one destination the next. Occasionally though, circumstances call for a ride. That’s what happened earlier this week when my brother, my sister-in-law, my husband and I decided to grab a bite to eat before catching comedian Bill Burr at The Wilbur Theatre. We parked in the Boston Common Garage near the entrance kiosk at the corner of Beacon and Charles streets. The parking spot was closer to our dining venue, Toscano, than the theater, but it was a warm spring night. We figured we’d enjoy a walk across Boston Common en route to the theater after dinner. As time was getting tight, we opted for Plan B: Uber. I summoned a car, and a sparkling new Nissan Murano arrived within three minutes. The driver was polite and knowledgeable. The car was pristine. After the show, we decided to hail a cab for the return to our car. Upon learning our destination was only about a mile away, the driver became surly and demanded to know why we needed a cab. He was put off by what he groused would be “a $3 fare.” The car was stinky and cluttered. The fare came to $4.20. I gave him $6. I don’t have much vested in the debate centering on the pros and cons of using Uber versus hailing a cab, but I do have a preference. From now on, I’ll be choosing Uber. — Lisa Matte, editor in chief
