The Village of Sleepy Hollow

by Christie Rhodes

Oct 16, 2012

With Halloween around the corner, some friends and I decided to indulge the spookier corners of New York state where ghost stories have incubated for centuries and allowed to manifest unabated for generations of campfire tales. One our country’s earliest renowned storytellers was a New York man by the name of Washington Irving, who shared his harrowing headless haunt on the Hudson; an ageless ghost tale for the ages.

“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” was penned and published in 1820, but the tale survives on a living canvas in the Village of Sleepy Hollow, a scant 25 miles north of New York City. Much has changed, obviously, in the roughly two centuries since the inception of the tale, but the town has preserved its Dutch heritage and many of the eerie locales depicted in Irving’s work.

We walked through the graveyard where the headless horseman, along with every other character, is buried. Though the ghostly villain’s grave is unmarked, you can still make out the engraving on the tomb of Katrina van Tassel, who lay only a matter of yards from the horseman’s remains. Each grave is in the shadow of the old Dutch church and directly adjacent to the very spot on the bluff where Ichabod Crane fell off his horse after being spooked and pursued by the headless horseman.

The rest of the town outside of the graveyard is very quaint, and the villagers seem to have derived much of their identity from Irving’s most famous short story. While there is still an element of manufactured fright, haunted hay rides and manor tours, followed inexorably by the whitewashed exit through the gift shop, the Village of Sleepy Hollow is far from tiresome. And you will never see a graveyard anywhere else that feels so alive. The tale lives on today, and only the campfire has changed.
