Being from Kentucky, I feel like I am obligated to watch the Kentucky Derby. While I may not particularly enjoy horse racing the remainder of the year, Derby is always a fun day to enjoy the beginning of summer, drinks with friends and the most exciting two minutes in sports. The entire day (and days, if you’re in Louisville) leading up to the big moment is cause for celebration in Kentucky. After moving to Philadelphia, I was a bit disappointed I wouldn’t find a place to celebrate in the same southern style. Turns out, I was completely wrong! After some research spurred on by receiving an invite to a Derby party in Philadelphia, I discovered there are, in fact, lots of places in the Northeast (and around the country) that host events all throughout the day. And it’s not just the race; they’ve got mint juleps, hot brown sandwiches and Derby pie and even best-dressed contests for the delightful assortment of derby hats, sundresses and seersucker suits. Wherever I spend my day this Saturday, I’ll be having a great time when the race starts roughly after 6 p.m. I’d encourage you to find a celebration in your city and experience the fun of the Kentucky Derby! — Holly Godbey, marketing & sales assistant
