The Joys of Autumn

by patty

Oct 28, 2017

Without a doubt, fall is my favorite time of year, and this past week in Southern Oregon, Mother Nature has served up what for me is the quintessentially perfect autumn weather. Temperatures in the afternoons hover around 80, with cool, crisp mornings and bright blue, sunny skies. After a month and a half of heat and smoke in August and early September, the fresh air and unimpeded vistas of hillsides turning orange and gold are more appreciated than ever. Autumn foliage

The pleasant temperatures and the knowledge that wet, gray, short winter days loom in the future seem to give everyone a burst of energy and a desire to get out and enjoy the brilliant days. I notice the neighbors out in their yards, mowing and raking and putting their gardens to bed, and the sidewalks and paths host a greater number of dog walkers, strollers and joggers than during the hot summer months. A quick perusal of the calendar of upcoming events in the local paper shows a wealth of seasonal festivals and activities drawing residents and visitors out to enjoy the season’s bounty and holidays.

I’ll wager you’ll see similar events in your area at this time of year. If you live anywhere near farmland or orchards, I’m sure there are hay rides, corn and hay mazes and pumpkin patches to enjoy; and who wouldn’t want to get out and pick a basket of apples or pears and bring home a gallon of cider they’d helped press themselves? Those with a competitive spirit can take part in fun runs (costumed or not) and pumpkin-carving contests, Halloween pumpkins     Jack-o-lantern  and the daring have no trouble finding a host of haunted houses to test their mettle. I even note that several local wineries are hosting family-friendly open houses, with face painting, treats and pumpkin carving to entertain the kids while their parents can sip a little vino and stroll the vines. Fall vineyards

Wherever you find yourself this next week, at home or on the road, I hope you have the opportunity to get out and enjoy the season’s offerings!
