The Andy Warhol Museum

Jan 29, 2015

On a trip to the Steel City earlier this month, I spent a Sunday morning exploring The Andy Warhol Museum. Located near downtown Pittsburgh, where Warhol was born and grew up, the world-famous museum is a masterpiece, featuring an extensive collection of Warhol’s incredible art and archives spread chronologically throughout seven large floors. From the ground floor of the 88,000-square-foot facility, visitors take the elevator up and make their way down. The museum starts with descriptions, photographs and drawings from his early life, born as Andrew Warhola of Pittsburgh, the son of Slovakian immigrants, before showcasing his time working in commercial art and advertising in New York and leading the visual art movement known as pop art. While I have a strong appreciation for art, I’ll admit I wasn’t very familiar with Warhol’s work prior to my visit to the museum. I enjoyed seeing some of his work at the “Warhol: Art. Fame. Mortality” exhibition last year at The Dalí Museum but am so happy I took the time to experience Warhol’s museum in Pittsburgh. After spending hours walking through the space, I gained a strong appreciation for his work and enjoyed seeing the influence important people in different time periods had on his art. photo-118 Highlights from my visit included making my own Screen Testthe Silver Clouds exhibition, an uplifting installation of floating metallic “pillows” hovering in space; his silkscreen Mao series; and his personal collection from artist friends, featuring pieces like an incredible elephant display from Keith Haring covered with the black outlines of Haring’s symbolic Radiant Babies. Open Tuesday–Sunday, The Andy Warhol Museum is definitely worth a visit while in Pittsburgh. — Monique Barrett, eFlyer editor/associate editor
