On Saturday evening, I attended The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Red & White Ball at The Westin Philadelphia. The ballroom, which held no less than 500 people, was draped in red and white everywhere, as were the attendees in tuxedos with red bowties and gowns galore. In short, a significant amount of money and awareness was raised on behalf of ridding the world of horrible blood diseases, yet there’s so much more to do. I urge everyone’s continued commitment and diligence on this front. Having chatted and danced the previous night away, I’d worked up quite the appetite on Sunday morning. No offense to the hotel’s lobby restaurant; I wasn’t feeling the standard hotel breakfast menu/buffet. After all, I’m in downtown Philadelphia, and I’ve got to believe there’s a go-to Sunday morning breakfast experience in near proximity. Upon inquiring of the concierge downstairs, I was directed to Sabrina’s Café, a worthwhile 10-minute walk from the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel. An immediate good sign was a line edging out the door on a cold Sunday morning; I was not above sitting at the counter as I was just a party of one. With no counter wait, I naturally grabbed the end seat, which allowed for a bird’s-eye view of the kitchen and what was magically created within. My conservative yet delicious Wisconsin cheddar and spinach omelet with sausage and potatoes was immediately trumped by what can only be described as a continuous head-turning event emanating from the kitchen. Because there’s a limited amount of space allocated to this blog, I need only say this: stuffed challah French toast with Framer’s cream cheese topped with bananas and vanilla bean syrup! Are you kidding me? I’m not an overly spiritual guy, but holy cow! Having lived in New Jersey the better part of my life, I know a thing or two about diner breakfast food. While I just can’t acknowledge the Eagles, Flyers or Phillies, I must tip my hat to Sabrina’s Cafe. Philly scored BIG points with this establishment, of which there are four locations, so you have no excuse for missing out. Enjoy! I know I did! — David Katz, director of sales & marketing

There’s a lot happening on the beautiful island of Maui and recovery from the devastating fires in Lahaina is underway. Among happy events is a gorgeous cultural redesign of all the suites and villas at Fairmont Kea Lani, plus the opening of the resort’s Hale Kukuna — a 2,000-square-foot cultural center that focuses on sharing Hawai’ian culture, traditions and history, with the goal of a reciprocal sharing of ‘ike (knowledge) and mo’olelo (stories) that link the island’s storied past and vibrant present.

May 6, 2024Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History
All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
