We’ve all heard the phrase a thousands times — “New year, new you.” Everyone comes up with variations of the same resolutions: eat less, drink less, go to the gym more, learn something new, etc. One year, I became a vegetarian (for a few months), while another I brushed up on my Latin for all of a few weeks. It’s inevitable the resolutions end at some point, but that doesn’t stop us from making them again and again. Shortly before the New Year, I read an article online about a new approach to 2016 resolutions I think may be just what we need, especially those of us who can’t stick to one thing for an entire year. Instead of choosing a very specific goal, such as reaching a certain number on the scale or reading a pre-chosen total of books per month, choose a word that defines what you want your 2016 to look like. Maybe it’s an adjective you want to embody, like “content,” “patient” or “strong.” Maybe it’s a verb, like “love,” “play,” “travel” or even as simple as “be.” A one-word resolution can help open up doors to new ways of reaching your personal goals as you find creative ways to incorporate your new word into your day while also focusing on the important overall picture you want for your year. It may seem too simple and even a little cheesy, but I like it. It’s still not too late to start a New Year’s resolution; so if you’re still mulling over what you’d like to accomplish in the months ahead, why not give it a try? Who knows?
