I recently ran into Bob, a former colleague and mentor in the publication distribution business. Even in his late 60s, Bob could still pass for a spry leprechaun. He’s not a frequent world traveler, but his children recently sent him and his wife to the United Kingdom as an anniversary gift.

“Ever hear of the Mull of Kintyre, Johnny?.” he asked me. I replied that I heard it was a beautiful place in Scotland (recalling this more from McCartney’s song than from my long-ago geography classes).

“Beautiful ain’t the word. Magical. Mystical. Breath-taking. Life-giving.” His words and face become more alive with each word. He proceeded to tell me of gorgeous sightlines, the steep sides rising out of the sea, the historic lighthouse, the mist “oh, the glorious mist.” He even squeezed in 18 holes at Machrihanish. His score was triple digits (not quite matching our publisher’s golfing prowess), but by the sparkle in his eyes, it didn’t seem to matter.

As he walked away, I realized that while he may not be your typical global traveler, he certainly got the most out of his trip across the globe.
