This past Monday — July 28, 2014 — marked the 100^th commemoration of the opening of hostilities of the First World War. Earlier this month I had the opportunity to explore the history and consequences of the war and honor the millions who died at the Imperial War Museum in London. Located in the southeast region of the city, the museum recently reopened in time for this summer’s centenary following a multimillion-dollar transformation that added new galleries devoted to the First World War as well as an impressively remodeled atrium featuring a full-size aircraft and a German V2 rocket from World War II. The museum’s 14 new galleries showcase approximately 1,300 objects as well as several film and visitor interactive installations that tell the history of the first truly global war, from its optimistic start to its morbid end, with more than 16 million dead and 20 million wounded. The design of the galleries is captivating, intertwining information-packed displays with photographs, films, newspapers, uniforms, posters and weapons. The galleries do not shy away from showing the harshness and brutality of the war, with displays of clubs used in close combat trench warfare and even a replica trench. One could easily spend an entire day exploring the museum’s new galleries and taking in the history of the First World War’s events and individuals. Though my time was limited, I left with a greater understanding of the tragic impact of “The War to End All Wars” and the heroic sacrifices made during that time period in the United Kingdom and in Europe.
