If you haven’t heard of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge by now, you must be living in a cave. The grassroots effort to raise funds to find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, has spread like wildfire across the social media landscape since former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates challenged fellow Boston athletes to dump an ice-cold bucket of water of their heads. Frates, a talented college athlete with a brilliant professional career on the horizon, saw his dreams dashed following an ALS diagnosis. Since its inception in early summer, the challenge has gone viral. Just a few days ago, members of the Kennedy clan gathered in Hyannisport to take the challenge, culminating in a grand finale showing family matriarch Ethel Kennedy challenge President Barak Obama to take the challenge. While President Obama declined to do the ice bucket challenge, he did accept the alternate choice, agreeing to donate $100 to ALS research. Here’s how the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge works. A person accepts the challenge to dump a bucket of ice water over his/her head. That person posts a video of him/herself doing the challenge on Facebook and challenges others to do the same within 24 hours. Those who accept the challenge agree to donate $10 to ALS research. Those who decline are encouraged to donate $100 to ALS research. I took the challenge. So did my GT colleagues Patty Vanikiotis and John Wroblewski. It’s all in good fun and it’s for a good cause.
