I felt like I betrayed my family for the first time this spring. Yes, I went to a game at the new Yankee Stadium before I went to a game at Citi Field, the new home of the New York Mets. Why was this such a crime? Well, I grew up a die-hard Mets fan. I really didn’t have much of a choice — my older brother is a true die-hard Mets fan! We were all sad to see Shea Stadium torn down last year. New stadiums were being built for both the Mets and the Yankees at the same time. My whole family went to the opening-day game at Citi Field, but I was unfortunately unable to attend. Last month I had the opportunity to go to a Yankees game. My brother wasn’t pleased. And I was punished as I watched the Yankees claim victory. I felt like an outsider there in the Bronx. I needed to redeem myself and get to Citi Field! In celebration of Father’s Day this past weekend, my family went to Citi Field on Saturday to watch the Mets play the Tampa Bay Rays. Since it was my first time to the stadium, my brother and sister-in-law ( a die-hard Mets fans before meeting my brother — talk about a match!) gave me the grand tour of the new stadium. The bricks on the ground at the main entrance are all donated by fans. My brother and his wife proudly showed me their brick, which reads “I married my Mr. Met 11/4/06â€. The Rotunda is a beautiful tribute to Jackie Robinson and home to the monster Mets store. We ventured to the outfield, where I was given the grand tour of all the food venues, including the Kosher food stand (closed on Saturday) and a mini mart with fresh sushi. A Shake Shack, a ribs place and Belgium french fries were some other food highlights. A mini ballpark of games, designed for younger fans, is also set up in the outfield. The great thing about the new stadium is no matter where you are, you have a great view of the field and you don’t have to miss a play. Standing areas and eating areas are conveniently placed around the field. My tour ended fairly abruptly. We had to get food ourselves and head to my brother’s season ticket seats. Unfortunately, the game went to a rain delay in the 7th inning and the Mets ended up losing. Being a die-hard Mets fan means taking the good with the bad. And, we are still only two games out of first place. For those of you wondering, Citi Field is far superior — and half the price — to Yankee Stadium. –Alex Young, vice president and associate publisher
