One of my favorite pastimes in the spring, summer and fall in Bucks County is exploring the Delaware Canal State Park and towpath, the longest trail in Eastern Pennsylvania, running from Easton to Bristol for approximately 60 miles along the Delaware River. Originally built in the early 1800s as a towpath for mules to trod while transporting cargo barges, the vehicle-free National Recreational Trail is used today by joggers, bikers, fishermen, bird-watchers, horseback riders and walkers. Following the meanderings of the Delaware, the towpath is full of interesting curves and gorgeous views of the canal and surrounding environment. My family, friends and I usually park near Washington Crossing State Park and bike up to New Hope to lunch and enjoy refreshing beers at Triumph Brewing Company or into the beautiful riverside town of Stockton, N.J., to visit Stockton Market for fresh juice and snacks. Traveling to New Jersey from Pennsylvania’s towpath is very easy, with five bridges that connect to the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park on the Jersey side, where the trail runs 70 miles from Bordentown to New Brunswick. One of our favorite ways to explore is to start in Washington Crossing, bike up to New Hope, cross over into the quaint New Jersey town of Lambertville, bike up to Stockton, and make our way back down to Washington Crossing on the Pennsylvania side, for a round-trip ride of approximately 22 miles. The Delaware Canal State Park hosts a number of events throughout the year, attracting visitors with digital photography workshops, rock-climbing classes and several races, such as the Bucks County Marathon Series. The fall season is an excellent time to visit and experience the historic trail, which will soon be dotted with colorful leaves and ablaze with seasonal color. — Monique Barrett, eFlyer editor/associate editor
