A herd of baby elephants are taking over Resorts World Las Vegas. On Memorial Day weekend, 26 life-size baby elephant statues appeared at the newest resort on the Strip.
Coincidentally, my sister Jean and her husband arrived there at the same time. Knowing my interest in large public art displays like these, Jean texted me pictures of the magnificent, colorful beasts.
Elephant Parade is the world’s largest touring public art exhibition of decorated elephant statues. Created by artists and celebrities, statues tour the world to raise awareness of elephant conservation.
The elephants will remain at Resorts World through Sept. 5. Following the exhibit, the elephants will be auctioned off to benefit elephant welfare programs. Additionally, replicas and other related products for purchase will benefit elephant welfare and conservation projects.
Elephant Parade started in 2007 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Since then, Elephant Parade visited more than 40 international cities. Two more stops for the Elephant Parade later this summer are Bristol, England, and Doetinchem, the Netherlands.

Head south to Texas for Halloween fun and enjoy a warm-weather extension this fall. In Austin, elegance, history and spooky tales are the themes at The Driskill. The hotel is said to be frequented by the spirit of Jesse Driskill, who constructed the property in 1886. The scent of cigar smoke in public spaces allegedly announces his presence. A life-sized painting of Jesse is displayed in the hotel lobby, and guests can stay on the lookout for him during the daily 4 p.m. history tour.
