As delicious as the food was on my Cancún trip, it was not the highlight. The best part of the trip was my niece’s wedding.

When Sam told us she was having a destination wedding in Cancún, we were all excited, but I might have been the most. Having never been to Mexico, a trip to an all-inclusive resort with family and friends seemed ideal for my first trip.

After a few of us took the same flight out of Chicago, we rode together to Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort in Cancún. Once there, we had a few hours before the first night’s activities.

In the evening, we all met at Interlude, a lounge in the main building. Offering indoor and outdoor areas, it was the perfect casual area for catching up or introductions.

The next day we had our choice of many activities, including kayaking, volleyball, golf and more. A bunch of us met at Spin, a hidden gem of a bar where we watched the Chicago Bears game before returning to more fun in the sun.

On wedding day we met on a beach a short walk away but secluded from the other beach areas. My nephew Matt served as the officiant, with his children Delaney as flower girl and Teddy as ring bearer. Tears and cheers erupted as Sam and Dan recited their vows.

After pictures, we reconvened in Sam and Dan’s huge honeymoon suite. The outside terrace featured a fully lit dance floor and amazing views. After a few speeches, we ate, drank and danced the night away.

Looking back, it was such an amazing trip. I wouldn’t change anything. The ceremony was beautiful. The weather was perfect. The resort was spectacular. Of course, the best part was seeing Sam so happy as she starts a new phase in her life.
