Since my friends and I planned on attending the Chicago Bandits National Pro Fastpitch 2019 draft at Kings Dining and Entertainment in Rosemont Monday night, we decided to spend our whole day in the area. Rosemont is a suburb sandwiched between Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Chicago.
Our day started at Rivers Casino. Opened in 2011, the building sits above a few inches of water to comply with state law regarding riverboat gambling. We aren’t big gamblers, but we had fun playing Pai Gow and making silly dollar bets with each other.
Late afternoon we moved to Kings for some bowling, shuffleboard and billiards. Kings is part of the ever-growing Rosemont entertainment district. The area has quickly become a destination.
While I bowled good games, I topped out at 199, still chasing my elusive first 200 game. I wasn’t so lucky at billiards, as I sunk the black ball too many times.

By early evening it was time for the Bandits’ draft party in the restaurant area. Bandits fans packed the room and watched the draft on big screens live-streamed from Nashville, Tennessee. Mingling with the fans and keeping the event lively were current players Courtney Gano and Abby Ramirez, along with legend Amber Patton, mascot Swiper and several members of the front office.
Kings served appetizers including delicious fried mozzarella and margherita pizza. Lightly breaded and served with a buttermilk ranch marinara, the mozzarella sticks were a gooey delight. The pizza was cooked to a crisp perfection and topped with generous gobs of fresh mozzarella. Honestly, I was happy with just these items, but Kings followed this with a buffet of salads, chicken and pasta. Kings serves awesome food, well above the average bar offering.
I will be in Rosemont for many Bandits games this summer, but I will also be there for the outdoor concerts, indoor skydiving, bowling, comedy and more at Parkway Bank Park. A quick 15-minute drive from my house, the area offers all of the fun of downtown Chicago without the hassle.

May 14, 2025Hotel Van Zandt Review
One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
