I never believe it until I see it. What, you may ask? The weather, of course! Every week, it seems like the meteorologists of the world are told to make even the smallest drop of rain into a drama. However, with the storms in California last week, I was more prone to listen this time when they announced snowstorms for Sunday and Monday. I was on Long Island during the weekend when the blizzard warnings were starting to take hold. My transportation back to Manhattan — the Long Island Railroad — said it would stop running trains when 10 inches of snow accumulated. This was before a snowflake had even dropped. I believed this was another Weather Channel bluff and prepared myself for a cozy day in the suburbs and a late departure back into the city. Sunday, I awoke to a winter wonderland. No more than three or four inches had accumulated, but the snow was still falling and there was no sign of it stopping. I am happy to say our friendly weather people were not only right, but they had a blizzard to keep themselves in business for full weather coverage on all the TV networks for the next 24 hours. Heeding the warning of the LIRR, I took a 5:25 p.m. train, running only two or three minutes behind. I was in the city by 6:20 p.m. By 10 p.m., all service had stopped. The subways I needed, the 1 and N, were running without problems, and I was home without a hitch. Another testament to a great city with solid, not always perfect, public transportation. For that, I am thankful and give the city credit. Thanks to city workers, I was one of the lucky, or unlucky depending on how you see it, people who could be prepared for Monday morning work without any weather hindrance. — Alex Young, vice president and associate publisher
