Billy Joel the Entertainer

by John Wroblewski

Oct 12, 2016

With the Chicago Cubs having the most wins in baseball, there have been a lot of magical moments at Wrigley Field this season.  A couple weeks ago, I witnessed a magic evening of a different sort.  On this gorgeous summer night, Billy Joel put on a winning show.

Starting with “Prelude/Angry Young Man” and eventually ending with “Only the Good Die Young,” Billy performed for over two hours.  The more hardcore fans were delighted to hear “The Entertainer” and “Big Man on Mulberry Street,” while the casual fan probably best enjoyed his six-song encore of big hits.  One short break Joel took was in the middle of “River of Dreams,” when Crystal Taliaferro broke into “Heat Wave.”

Wrigley Field is such a cool place to see a concert.  With the center field stage, the immediate backdrop is the classic scoreboard, followed by the famous nearby rooftops.  Beyond that you can see downtown Chicago to the right.

I have seen Joel twice at Wrigley and loved each show. On my bucket list, though, is seeing him perform at Madison Square Garden, which would rival Wrigley in that it is Joel’s home stadium.

Loving his music for 40-plus years, Joel is the one musician I will see every time I can. This last concert was special because I experienced it with my family (admittedly more casual fans). As we joined the sellout crowd in singing “Piano Man,” I soaked it all in and thought this was the perfect way to spend an evening. Great music. Loved ones. Beautiful scenery.

One of Hawai’i’s Most Popular (and Controversial) Attractions Being Demolished

If you haven’t actually climbed them, you’ve seen beautiful photos of them at one time or another: Hawai’i’s Stairway to Heaven, located on Oahu. The 3,922-step hike ascends Koolau Mountain Range and has been illegal to hike since 1987. But this has not stopped travelers and locals from doing so, even with a steep fine of $1,000 for trespassing.
