Ballparks of Baseball

by David Coker

Dec 1, 2015

Baseball has been an obsession of mine since I was a child. A notable aspect of baseball history is the ballparks, which are almost always unique. I love traveling through the country and seeing how a city’s history influences its ballpark choices. Below is a brief list of some of my favorite parks. My favorite (and the template for all modern ballparks) stadium is Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore. Situated in downtown Baltimore a few blocks away from the Inner Harbor, Camden Yards feels nestled and integrated into the city, and its outfield backdrop of the monolithic B&O Warehouse ties the park together. There’s not a bad seat in the park, it’s open and bright, and the concourse of Eutaw Street is large enough to accommodate the amount of fans. What’s not to love? Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia is designed on the principles of Camden Yards, with wide, sunlit walkways and convenient seating. It has a great variety of ballpark food options that incorporate Philly style without going overboard, and the cheesier features, like the light-up Liberty Bell, are all part of the fun. Unfortunately, CBP is part of a sports complex that feels isolated from the rest of the city. While still easy to get to, there isn’t quite the same city feel its inspiration ballpark evokes. Fenway Park in Boston was, for my Red Sox fandom, something of a pilgrimage, and it didn’t disappoint. More than 100 years old, Fenway is the oldest park in baseball, and it feels it. While there’s a tremendous sense of history and awe that comes with the park, its age shows with weird dim concourses, the notoriously obstructed sight lines and cramped seating. The Green Monster and other Fenway construction quirks make it influential on the play of the game itself, which is always a great feature. Fenway is worth a visit for the history alone, and management has done an excellent job of modernizing it as best as possible. — Sean Williams, intern
