Although I’m celebrating an anniversary of my own, having started just a year ago as Intel Editor, I feel like the new kid on the block. Everyone else seems to have been with Global Traveler since its beginning. It was actually two years ago this month when I made the first contact with the magazine, although I had read several copies. I was skiing in Maine with a friend and fellow travel writer, and we came in early because the wind had forced the lifts to close. Anyone with half a brain would have left the frigid mountain before that, but who says travel writers (or skiers, for that matter) are bright? My friend checked her email and saw a post from Lisa Matte, seeking a writer for a First Person article on Faro, Portugal. “You wrote the book on Portugal,” she said. “You should call her.” So I did, and began that night writing about my daughter discovering a chapel in Faro decorated in human bones. It was a thrill to see my article in full color in such a classy-looking layout. Two years later, I still open each issue of the magazine with the same sense of anticipation to see how good they’ve made my words and my partner’s photos look. It’s never disappointing.
