This past Saturday my roommate and I opted for a night of comfort food over St. Patrick’s Day festivities in the city. We hadn’t explored a new restaurant in quite some time and decided to broaden our horizons. Let’s face it, we were probably on a maturity kick from abstaining from going out on a Saturday night.

We settled on an Italian restaurant in Washington Square West, Amis Trattoria, for an 8:45 p.m. reservation. Amis has two more locations, in the Navy Yard and Westport, and is part of the Vetri Family of restaurants. We were seated at a high top and immediately felt cozy in the softly lit environment; we knew we had made a great choice.

We ordered the bufala ricotta bruschetta and fried Brussels sprouts with lemon to start. The bufala ricotta was an incredible, creamy spread, and the bread was thick and delicious. They also brought out additional focaccia bread that I decided to spread the ricotta over as well.

The Brussels sprouts were to die for, perfectly crispy, and the lemon added an unexpected zest that complemented the dish nicely. For my main course I ordered the tonarelli cacio e pepe, — if we’re talking comfort food, this is the dish for you. I’ve had cacio e pepe in Italy, and this was a creamier, decadent take on the simple but delicious staple.

We skipped out on dessert — I had far too much bread — but the options looked delicious, and I’ll definitely return to try out some more dishes at Amis.
