As an avid food fan, I particularly find myself drawn to Mexican cuisine, preferably authentic Mexican! Lucky for me, my neighborhood is home to an amazing Mexican restaurant called Fonda. Whether it’s for a relaxing weekend brunch, a work happy hour or a romantic dinner, Fonda has become my go-to spot in the East Village. As a frequent customer, I learned Fonda’s award-winning chef is Roberto Santibanez. It’s not hard to believe the authenticity and high quality of Fonda’s cuisine, considering he was raised in Mexico City and trained at the renowned Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in Paris. Although it’s a difficult decision to make, I’d have to say my personal favorite menu item is the Camarones Adobados, Yucatán-style pan-seared jumbo shrimp served over spicy, creamy green rice and a black bean velvet sauce. YUM! Of course, this meal is not complete unless you start off with Fonda’s fresh homemade guacamole, served with not only traditional chips but also warm, soft tortillas! Add a classic margarita on the rocks with salt and you will be more than satisfied. The staff at Fonda is also a big reason why I have come to love this downtown spot. Many are of Mexican descent and always happy to make suggestions about what dish to try next. Though I would like to try their Brooklyn location and their recently opened Chelsea restaurant, I have become quite loyal to my East Village Fonda team, and that says something! — Olivia Falcione, advertising manager
