As we begin to feel the cooler weather of fall, I can’t help but be reminded of the similar weather I experienced in Rome during my semester there. There was nothing better than walking out of my apartment on a brisk Rome morning and making my first stop of the day at the bakery for a cappuccino and warm chocolate croissant. Every day, without fail, there would be a heart shaped into the cappuccino foam, made by the friendly Italian who worked the counter. It was a great way to start my day. Little moments like these make me remember how fortunate I was to have had the opportunity to live in Rome for a period of time. Looking back, I can still say Rome is like no other city I have ever been. Every day I would roam the historic streets of the city, marveling at how the city’s architecture remained standing and so intact. It’s truly amazing when you see the remarkable buildings and think about how they were constructed during a time when there wasn’t any technology available. I grew to appreciate not only the ancient history of Rome but also the modern culture of the city. As I have family in the city, I gained a true understanding of the phrase “la vita bella,” the beautiful life. After spending time with my family, I learned that no one knows how to enjoy life better than the Italians. From food to family and friends, they seem to really understand the importance of stopping for a moment to appreciate their surroundings. This was nice to experience, especially after the fast-paced lifestyle of America. While I wouldn’t want to live anywhere other than the United States, I am happy to have taken a piece of Rome with me as a reminder to always take a moment to enjoy life! — Olivia Falcione, account executive
