Until June 18, visitors to the Belvedere in Vienna can enjoy “Lawrence Alma-Tadema: Decadence & Antiquity.” The Dutch artist, who was educated in Belgium, lived in London with his artist wife Laura Theresa Epps. Together, they assembled a vast collection of objects, materials and furnishings from a multitude of cultures that made its way into finished paintings.
Alma-Tadema’s fascination with objects from antiquity became the subject of many paintings, which depicted scenes drawn from life in ancient Rome, Pompeii and Egypt, and that leant a sense of authenticity and authority to his work that later inspired filmmakers including Enrico Guazzoni and Ridley Scott in their epic historical films.
