Overlooking the Bay of Naples from its cliffside perch on Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula, Bellevue Syrene stands prominently as one of the region’s most storied hotels. The property’s sweeping terraces, ancient Roman vestiges and long-standing reputation for refined hospitality are part of what has made it a destination for generations of travelers. But behind the historic façade is a story not only of an iconic hotel, but also of family. For many members of the Attanasio-Russo family, hospitality is not just a career, but a legacy.
“My sister Adda and I represent the fifth generation of hoteliers in our family,” said Amelia Attanasio, brand manager and owner, Bellevue Group. “Our family’s entry into the world of hospitality was not the result of a single entrepreneurial decision, but the natural evolution of a passion passed down through generations.”
That continuity came into focus last fall when Global Traveler was present as Bellevue Syrene celebrated a remarkable milestone: 205 years of hospitality. For the Attanasio-Russo family, the anniversary represented an opportunity to reflect on the layered history of a property long intertwined with Sorrento itself.
“The 205th anniversary of Bellevue Syrene was conceived as a three-day celebration centered on continuity and shared memory,” Attanasio explained. The event welcomed press, hoteliers, local leaders and friends of the property to Sorrento for a series of gatherings designed to highlight both the hotel and its cultural setting.
“Bellevue Syrene is not just a hotel for us. It is part of our personal and family history,” Attanasio said.
While many historic European hotels eventually transition to corporate ownership, Bellevue Syrene remains firmly guided by the family, who maintains a hands-on role in the property while working alongside a professional management team.
The matriarch of the family’s hospitality vision continues to shape the atmosphere of the hotel. “My mother, Elsa Russo, CEO and owner, has had a profound and very personal impact on the identity of our properties,” Attanasio said. Russo’s approach to design is instinctive and deeply tied to the spirit of place. She regularly updates furnishings, art collections and creative details throughout the hotel.
The result is an environment blending elegance, intimacy and inspiration, where guests feel less like they’re visiting a museum and more as if they’ve been invited to a beautifully lived-in home. That philosophy also extends to the staff, some of whom have been with Bellevue Syrene for decades.
As Bellevue Syrene represents the historical heart of the Bellevue Group, the family’s attentions extend beyond Sorrento. In southern Italy’s Basilicata region, the Attanasio-Russo family recently introduced Vetera Matera, a luxury hotel set within the ancient cave dwellings of the UNESCO-listed Sassi di Matera.
“Our expansion into Matera was driven by an immediate and very emotional connection,” Attanasio said. The hotel’s concept as an albergo diffuso, or scattered hotel, allowed the family to work within the existing architecture of the Sassi rather than imposing new construction.
The eight-year restoration process focused on preserving the authenticity of the historic site while introducing a discreet level of luxury. Architects carefully restored the stone structures while emphasizing the natural light, materials and atmosphere of the caves.
Luxury, in this context, is intentionally understated. The result offers guests an immersive experience within one of Italy’s most distinctive landscapes.
Beyond the architecture, Vetera represents a notable step forward for Matera’s luxury hospitality scene. While the Sassi have attracted growing international attention in recent years, truly high-end accommodations remain relatively limited within the historic cave district. Vetera introduces a level of refinement rarely found in such a dramatically historic setting, combining restored stone dwellings with contemporary comforts and personalized service. The result allows guests to experience one of Italy’s most extraordinary landscapes not as spectators but as participants in its living history.
Together, Bellevue Syrene and Vetera Matera illustrate a core philosophy uniting the Bellevue Group portfolio, which also includes Capo Santa Fortunata Relais, an estate focused on nature-driven hospitality, and Hotel Morfeo in Milan, which reflects a more contemporary urban interpretation of the brand’s values.
“Innovation, for us, is about continuously refining the guest experience through attention to detail, human relationships, and a deeper connection to place,” Attanasio said.
For Attanasio, the future of the Bellevue Group is less about scale and more about coherence. “We want the Bellevue Group to grow in a way that feels natural and coherent, preserving the soul of each property while allowing it to evolve,” she said.
In Sorrento, the terraces of Bellevue Syrene will continue to welcome guests just as they have for more than two centuries. In Matera, Vetera introduces a new chapter. Together, they illustrate a rare continuity in hospitality, with one family carrying forward the traditions of the past while quietly shaping the future.
