Beijing’s new Daxing International Airport will begin operations before Sept. 30, the Civil Aviation Administration of China announced last month.
At the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, held March 3, CAAC director Feng Zhenglin said construction of the airport’s main body is finished. Internal furnishing work and equipment installation and testing are taking place now, with all work expected to be finished by June 30.
Feng also said the airport completed flight inspections. The airport is expected to have a total passenger capacity of 45 million by 2021. That will rise to 72 million passengers by 2025, Feng added.
The airport is intended to be a new international travel hub for China. It’s 31 miles from the Xiong’an New Area, an in-development high-tech hub three times the size of New York City, in neighboring Hebei Province.
Beijing Daxing International Airport is intended to help relieve the Chinese capital’s existing major international hub, Beijing Capital International Airport, which struggles with overcapacity issues. Beijing Capital was the world’s second-busiest by passenger volume in 2017, seeing 95.8 million passengers — far more than its intended 83 million passenger capacity. Flight delays are a common problem as a result.

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
