Thousands of travellers were left stranded in Bali when the eruption of the Mount Agung volcano forced the island’s international airport to close, as volcanic ash clouds pose visibility challenges for flights.
Continuing tremors caused concern about another larger eruption and, on Monday, the government raised the volcano alert to the highest level and expanded an evacuation zone around Mount Agung to a six-mile radius.
More than 400 flights were canceled Tuesday from Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali’s capital, with about 60,000 passengers affected.
The airport, where flights have been grounded since Sunday, is scheduled to remain closed until Wednesday morning, but the continuing eruption could further delay the opening.
The international airport on Lombok (LOP), a neighboring island, was also closed Monday night but reopened Tuesday.
Mount Agung is one of more than 120 active volcanoes extending the length of Indonesia sitting on a so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. It last erupted in 1963.
Around 100,000 people live in villages within the danger zone alongside the mountain, and as many as 150,000 may need to relocate.
Bali’s governor ordered hotels to provide a free accommodation for stranded tourists, and some visitors were advised to travel by bus and ferry to Surabaya to fly to other destinations.
