South American carrier Avianca Brasil announced its official departure from the Star Alliance partnership. After declaring bankruptcy earlier in the year, this departure comes as no surprise for many fellow alliance members. The alliance still includes industry titans like United Airlines and Lufthansa, but will be left with just 27 partners — few of which serve South America.

Of the remaining Star Alliance partners, only Avianca Colombia and Copa remain in the South American sector and continually serve regional flights in the area. The limited South American coverage will be felt after Sept. 1, when the two airlines are left to fill the need for alliance members in the area.

All is not lost with Avianca Brasil’s exit, as LATAM could pull through and fill the gap in the partnership. The airline remains a dominant carrier serving South America, but is already a oneworld alliance partner.

Any frequent travelers that may notice the departed airline’s departure may be few and far between. The airline’s services had been dwindling for years with Avianca Colombia coming in strong as another viable option for travelers flying within Brazil — international flyers may not notice at all.
