KLM Royal Dutch Airlines now allows travelers to use augmented reality at the touch of their fingertips to gauge if their hand baggage falls within permitted sizes. The service, available through KLM’s app, uses a smartphone camera and augmented reality in the form of a transparent, virtual KLM suitcase to indicate permitted baggage dimensions. A virtual image is placed in reality next to a traveler’s real-life bag to compare and contrast.

Currently, the function is out on the KLM App and is only available for iPhone and iOS users. The service is still under development and KLM hopes to improve it in the future, as AR technology develops.

“By harnessing the potential of AR, KLM is taking the next step in terms of digital service provision. With the AR hand baggage check, passengers can now see at a glance whether their hand baggage is the correct size. By offering this service, we are placing the needs of our customers first. We also continue to be pioneers of innovation in our passengers’ best interests,” said Pieter Groeneveld, senior vice president, digital, Air France-KLM.

The addition of the service is only the latest of several others designed to enhance the flight experience. The app also recently added a 360-degree Dreamliner aircraft display to its functions.

Millions of travelers downloaded the app, which boasts more than 100,000 active users each day. More than 70 percent of app users are logged in permanently and use the app several times each month, before, during and after travel.
