As more attention is drawn to the current state of the world’s oceans, andBeyond turns its focus to the Indian Ocean coastline.
“Our oceans are facing unprecedented threats,” said Joss Kent, CEO, andBeyond. “Global climate change, over-fishing, pollution and a variety of threats from human populations all over the world are putting increasing pressure on marine resources. Oceans are the next battleground for global cooperation because they truly have no borders. Our vision has always been to leave the world a better place than we found it. We are very aware that, if we don’t act now, we may face a world without coral reefs and the variety of species that they support in our lifetime. Our three island properties are in places that play a critical role in restocking coral reefs and fish populations and are thus crucial to protect right now.”
Across three island properties, the Oceans Without Borders program established a conservation model that includes logistical support of and enlarging current marine protected areas; upgrading current marine-protected areas to marine reserves; driving sustainable community benefits through tourism; supporting current conservation and research initiatives; and using flagship projects to showcase marine ecosystem challenges.
“Each of the three [participating properties] has also identified its own priorities for conservation and research,” said Dr. Tessa Hempson, operations manager, Oceans Without Borders. andBeyond Mnemba Island plans to upgrade its marine conservation area; andBeyond Benguerra focuses on community projects; and andBeyond Vamizi Island runs a program to assess populations for predator species, tagging grey reef sharks.
For travelers, andBeyond now offers the Oceans Without Borders Small Group Journey, for a unique experience alongside Hempson and her team at andBeyond Vamizi Island. All profits from the itinerary go back to marine conservation.
