All Nippon Airways unveiled a special sea turtle livery to be featured on the carrier’s first Airbus A380. The design was chosen from more than 2,000 submissions received in an open competition organized by the carrier.

The winning entry, a colorful design featuring the Hawai’ian green sea turtle is known as the “Honu” in Hawai’i and represents good luck and prosperity. Being designed after the green sea turtle, ANA adopted the name “Flying Honu” for its A380 fleet.

The aircraft will operate on the carrier’s more popular leisure route, Tokyo (NRT)–Honolulu (HNL).

The carrier supports activities in Hawai’i that protect the green sea turtle, listed as an animal in danger of extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

ANA placed an order for three A380 aircraft in 2016, making it the first Japanese airline to operate the superjumbo when it takes delivery in early 2019.

“ANA is moving forward with preparations to offer new passenger services to coincide with the introduction of the A380, and will provide updates as they become available,” said ANA.

Designed to face challenges in the aviation industry, the A380’s unique size allows airlines to maximize revenue while offering unrivaled levels of comfort. Around 2 million Japanese travelers fly to Hawai’i annually, and ANA seeks to significantly increase its share in the market with the introduction of its newest aircraft.
