Amtrak’s seating is relatively spacious, especially when compared to that of most planes, but that may soon change.

The railroad company is considering a new economy class with smaller seats and less legroom — similar to that of airplanes.

“We are looking at doing some creative things in terms of creating an economy class,” said Wick Moorman, departing co-chairman, Amtrak, in a speech at the National Press Club. “There will be some other things that just don’t make it quite as comfortable,” such as reduced seat pitch — the distance between rows of seats.

Right now, there aren’t any middle seats in Amtrak’s coach-class carriages, and seating space in the economy class is as spacious as that of most first-class cabins on airplanes.

Moorman said the proposal is under consideration and no decisions have been made yet. Richard Anderson, formerly of Delta Air Lines, became president and co-CEO of Amtrak last month. He and Moorman will share duties until Moorman departs in September.
