Following a two-year hiatus, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines partially reinstate an interline agreement.

The agreement gives the airlines the option to rebook customers on to each other’s flights and arrange for baggage transfers in the event of a flight delay or cancellation — good news for customers.

The airlines previously had an agreement in place in 2015, but Delta canceled following a dispute over rates charged for the moving of passengers. The new agreement only covers flight disruptions and does not allow either airline to sell tickets on behalf of the other. Both airlines will still seek to rebook customers on their own flights or on partner airlines when possible, but the agreement adds another option for customers to get where they need to be in the case of a service disruption.

Delta was recently named World’s Most On-Time Airline among major carriers by travel analyst firm OAG, but following computer system issues in August 2016 and severe thunderstorms in April 2017 resulting in thousands of canceled flights, the agreement brings some peace of mind for frequent Delta customers.
