American Airlines now provides a passport-scanning feature on its mobile app. American Airlines is the first airline to offer a service of this kind. The passport chip-scanning feature transmits passport information to the airline, so passengers do not need a customer service agent to recheck their passports when arriving at the airport for international flights.

The app provides easy-to-follow instructions for the process, possible via both iOS and Android devices.

The feature is one of many new offerings on the American Airlines app. Other recent improvements include boarding notifications, a dark mode option and Siri shortcuts.

“We are continuously adding features to our app to make travel easier and worry-free for our customers,” said Maya Leibman, chief information officer, American Airlines. “Mobile passport scanning removes a time-consuming step, providing our customers with a smoother check-in experience for international flights.”
