American Airlines is canceling its Boeing 737 MAX flights through at least Jan. 15, 2020.

The airline says the software updates to the fleet will likely be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration, which will lead to the “recertification of the aircraft later this year and resumption of commercial service in January 2020.”

The airline has 24 MAX planes in its fleet and 12 more on order. Airline officials are assuming the carrier will gradually resume flights with the plane by Jan. 16. American will start with about 20 MAX flights daily in mid-January until all of its planes are once again flying in February. The airline previously canceled about 140 daily flights through Dec. 3.

In response, the FAA said it is “following a thorough process, not a prescribed timeline, for returning the Boeing 737 Max to passenger service. The FAA will lift the aircraft’s prohibition order when it is deemed safe to do so.”

Southwest Airlines previously said it was canceling MAX flights through Jan. 5 and United Airlines canceled through Dec. 19. Since March 2019, the planes have remained grounded following two deadly crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia.
