As the worldwide trend to ditch plastic straws takes hold, American Airlines is one of the latest to jump on the bandwagon. The airline announced it’s replacing plastic drinking straws with ones made from straw, and replacing plastic drink stirrers with bamboo alternatives. The change will be effective on all flights starting in November.
The airline said it would also switch from plastic flatware to eco-friendly alternatives in its lounges in the coming months. The airline estimates this will save 71,000 pounds of plastic each year.
Alaska Airlines also announced plans to phase out plastic straws; no other airlines made such commitments yet.
These changes come on the heels of a campaign to eliminate plastic waste in landfills and in the world’s oceans. Starbucks is among several food companies making similar pledges; it said it will also stop using polystyrene foam cups by 2020. Hyatt Hotels will stop using plastic straws by this September.
