Alitalia’s new relationship with Etihad Airways is taking precedence over its previous partnership with Air France-KLM. Alitalia will not renew its agreements with Air France-KLM when the current term expires at the end of 2016.
The existing agreements, negotiated in 2009 and 2010, govern segments of cargo and passenger services operated by the three carriers.
“These agreements are no longer beneficial, either commercially or strategically, to the new Alitalia and its ambitious turnaround plan,” Silvano Cassano, CEO, Alitalia. “They were negotiated when Alitalia was in a very different position, with the result that the agreements in their current forms favor the other party.”
