Airlines Improve Performance, Passengers Still Complain

More flights are arriving on time and airlines are canceling fewer flights than ever, but passengers are still unhappy, according to a Department of Transportation report released last month.

Some 83 percent of flights on leading U.S. airlines arrived on time in February, up from 81 percent in January and 72 percent in February 2015. The best performing are Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines, with Southwest having the best on-time percentage of the largest four carriers, followed by Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines. Spirit Airlines and JetBlue Airways were late most often; more than 30 percent of their flights ran behind.

The biggest 12 canceled 1.6 percent of their flights in February, which is a decrease from 2.6 percent in January and 4.8 percent in February of 2015. Spirit had the highest cancellation rate at 3.9 percent and Hawaiian had the lowest, canceling only three flights in February.

Despite these improvements, passengers still seem unhappy: complaints against U.S. airlines rose to 1,113 from 1,039 a year ago. The report tracked only complaints made through the government; many more people who complain directly aren’t counted in this tally.
