Airbnb Releases Valentine’s Day Booking Trends

Feb 14, 2016
Daily

Popular community-based accommodation service Airbnb recently released booking trends and statistics leading up to Valentine’s Day, comparing how the holiday stacks up to travel for the rest of the year.

According to the study, about 25 percent of Valentine’s Day bookings were made 45 days or more in advance of the holiday, around Jan. 1, with the remaining 75 percent of bookings being made after the 45-day mark. In comparison, the data showed 45 percent of bookings for New Year’s Eve were made 45 days or more in advance in mid-November, possibly indicating a tendency to plan New Year’s Eve travel more thoroughly than travel for Valentine’s Day.

There is a 14 percent rise in Valentine’s Day travel over the Sundays leading up to or immediately following the holiday. Valentine’s Day and adjacent weekend bookings were highest in Denmark, followed by Poland, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the United States.

When comparing Valentine’s Day bookings to birthday-related bookings, the study found Airbnb bookings overall were most likely during an individual member’s birthday month. In fact, 9 percent of members are more likely to book accommodations during their birth month than any other month of the year, including popular holiday months such as November and December.

In addition, the study also included statistics on solo female travelers, perhaps for those looking to get away from the Valentine’s Day madness. According to the data, women were more likely to travel solo if originating from Japan, where female solo travelers easily outnumber male solo travelers. Following Japan for solo female travel were Taiwan, China, Russia and Brazil.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.

One of Hawai’i’s Most Popular (and Controversial) Attractions Being Demolished

If you haven’t actually climbed them, you’ve seen beautiful photos of them at one time or another: Hawai’i’s Stairway to Heaven, located on Oahu. The 3,922-step hike ascends Koolau Mountain Range and has been illegal to hike since 1987. But this has not stopped travelers and locals from doing so, even with a steep fine of $1,000 for trespassing.
