Air Canada announced its participation in a three-year collaboration, titled Canada’s Biojet Supply Chain Initiative, to bring more than 105,000 gallons of sustainable aviation biofuel, also known as biojet, into a shared fuel system at an undecided airport in Canada. The fuel system will be a more efficient operation compared to the traditional, multi-step fueling system.

“In doing our part toward responsible growth and environmental sustainability, Air Canada has invested billions of dollars in fleet renewal to reduce our fuel consumption and meet our current emission reduction goals,” said Teresa Ehman, director, environmental affairs, Air Canada. “Biojet holds the potential to be an important part of our strategy for achieving our longer-term industry goal of carbon neutral growth from 2020 and a 50 percent reduction in emissions by 2050, relative to 2005 levels. The CBSCI project will contribute significantly to advancing a biojet supply chain in this country.”

The CBSCI will be assisted by research from Queen’s University, the University of Toronto and McGill University. The biojet will be created from renewable feedstocks harvested sustainably from Canada’s agricultural resources. The biojet will be mixed with petroleum fuel in order to meet technical requirements and eventually introduced to other major Canadian airports.
