Abu Dhabi International Airport is the United Arab Emirates’ second busiest airport, and it’s looking to capitalize on that popularity. The airport last month enacted a new fee of Dh35, or around $9.53, for all passengers in transit through or departing from its gates. The new tax will be enacted and begin enforcement at the beginning of July. Abu Dhabi International Airport follows a similar move by Sharjah and Dubai airports, which also agreed to charge Dh35 to all airport passengers. The service fee applies to most passengers departing and arriving at these major airports. The only exception is children under 2 years of age or those in transit with the same airline crew and flight number. The fee is levied by Abu Dhabi Airports, the government-owned operator of five airports in the area. Abu Dhabi International is home to Etihad Airways, the third largest carrier in the Middle East. The new charge will be added on top of a Dh75 service fee and a security fee of Dh5 applied to all passengers leaving from Abu Dhabi International Airport. Around 8 million passengers passed through Abu Dhabi International during the first four months of 2016.
