A Year of Mackintosh in Glasgow

Daily

Glasgow’s beloved native son Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) is being honored throughout 2018 with a series of events held at venues throughout the city designed to commemorate his 150th birthday. Deemed one of the most influential personalities of the 20th century and a trailblazer in both the Scottish Arts and Crafts Movement and European Art Nouveau, Mackintosh was a true Renaissance man — architect, designer, artist and water colorist. During Mackintosh 150, visitors to this dynamic Scottish city immerse themselves in his work and legacy at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Glasgow Art Club, The Glasgow School of Art, Scotland Street School Museum, The Hill House, Helensburgh (National Trust for Scotland) and The Hunterian at University of Glasgow. Combine a spot of tea with your exploration at the Sauchiehall Street Tearooms and Mackintosh at the Willow.

At the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, a major retrospective spanning Mackintosh’s lifetime and his contribution to the Glasgow School, titled Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Making the Glasgow Style, is on view until Aug. 14. Included are select objects on view for the very first time. The exhibition encompasses nearly 250 pieces garnered from private and public collections, from stained glass, ceramics, mosaics and metalwork to furniture, embroidery, graphics, stenciling and architecture. The Hunterian at University of Glasgow will present a symposium exploring current conservation and reconstruction projects of Mackintosh buildings and interiors through workshops, lectures, tours, exhibitions and outings. Free guided tours of the Glasgow Art Club is offered on Tuesdays from the beginning of March until late May, and from the beginning of October until mid-December. The club features a stenciled artwork created by Macintosh in 1893 — his first major public work. The club also boasts other interior features designed by Mackintosh. A full calendar of events is available at http://www.glasgowmackintosh.com/events.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.

One of Hawai’i’s Most Popular (and Controversial) Attractions Being Demolished

If you haven’t actually climbed them, you’ve seen beautiful photos of them at one time or another: Hawai’i’s Stairway to Heaven, located on Oahu. The 3,922-step hike ascends Koolau Mountain Range and has been illegal to hike since 1987. But this has not stopped travelers and locals from doing so, even with a steep fine of $1,000 for trespassing.
